Malawi
Many areas remain isolated as rains continue to hamper search and rescue efforts, as well as the ability of responders to provide essential services such as food and clean water. Still, the Government of Malawi and humanitarian partners are moving as fast as possible to help those in need.
A UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team has visited the three most affected districts of Phalombe, Chikwawa and Nsanje, where it found extensive damage to houses and infrastructure, and an urgent need for food assistance. Shelter is also generally inadequate and WASH remains a serious concern. According to the UNDAC report, 173,700 people have been affected in the three assessed district alone.
A Preliminary Response Plan, which was officially launched by the Vice President on 21 January, is expected to be available later today. The plan is requesting $76 million to supplement Government’s response efforts, of which $13 million has already been committed, leaving a gap of around $64 million. The plan prioritizes life-saving activities.
Mozambique
A total of 137,659 people (30,721 families) have been affected by heavy rains and floods in Mozambique. In Zambézia Province alone, 119,564 people (24,278 families) have been affected, with 50,481 people (11,662 families) being hosted in 49 accommodation centers. Most of the accommodation centers are concentrated in Mopeia, Nicoadala, Maganja da Costa and Mocuba districts. About 11,000 houses have also been totally destroyed.
Entire districts remain isolated as assistance continues to be provided by air, including medicines and food. Search and rescue operations are also continuing. A comprehensive situation report is expected shortly.
Madagascar
Latest Government reports on the impact of Tropical Storm Chedza and continued rains note that 47 people have died, 120,300 have been affected and 43,000 displaced to temporary sites, mainly in the capital Antananarivo, where almost 31,000 people have been displaced. There are concerns among humanitarian partners on the conditions at temporary shelters (water, hygiene and sanitation, health and protection). However, many people have started returning home. The humanitarian response continues in 10 regions and 37 districts.
